The Wheelock Rail Trail near Sandbach follows the route of a disused railway from Ettiley Heath to Malkins Bank. Today the trail is a rich haven for wildlife and wild flowers and provides a pleasant level and wide route through the Cheshire East countryside.

After the railway closed in 1966 the track lay derelict for many years, gradually becoming more and more overgrown. After February 2000 the then County Council worked closely with the local community through the Wheelock Rail Trail Association to develop the track into a multi-user trail. It was officially opened in September 2002.

The whole route has now been upgraded with improved access points, better surfacing and new information boards to provide a high quality facility for all users.

Horse riders cannot cross the A534 Wheelock Bypass so riders will need to turn around and retrace their steps back to Elworth at this point.
