Barbour is a 5th generation family owned British company built on the founding principles of quality, attention to detail, durability and fitness for purpose.
Established in 1894 by John Barbour in South Shields in the North East of England, in 2019, we will celebrate 125 years of the Barbour family and the contribution they have made to the business in safely and responsibly passing the company from generation to generation.
From the beginning and throughout our history, we have always been committed to the welfare, health and safety of all our employees and suppliers and to delivering socially and environmentally responsible products to our customers. We are committed to ethical sourcing and respect for human rights and work hard to reduce our impact on the environment. As the market leader in manufacturing waxed cotton garments, we are proud to offer a unique global customer service whereby our customers can recycle their waxed cotton jackets by sending them to us to be rewaxed or repaired in order to sustain and extend the life of their jacket.
Responsibility & Sustainability
Since 1894 we have been a family business built proudly upon our roots in the British countryside. We believe in acting responsibly and minimising our impact on the environment, so that it can be enjoyed by generations to come.
Heritage and Growth
We are an authentic British brand. We protect and value our heritage because this will sustain our growth and evolution.
Customers and Quality
We take responsibility for attaining a high standard of quality. This is achieved through attention to detail in order to satisfy the diverse needs of the customers.
We are a strong family owned international business. We believe in financial independence to protect our future. We are careful about how we use our money.
Working Hard Together
We believe in a pragmatic approach to achieving results through a combination of intelligent teamwork and individual excellence.
We believe in an open and strong leadership to give clear direction. We endeavour to spread empowered leadership throughout the company to support our continuing success.
Better Cotton Initiative (BCI)
Barbour champions and supports The Better Cotton Initiative (BCI). The BCI was formed in 2009 to make global cotton production better for the people who produce it, better for the environment it grows in and better for the industry’s future, by developing Better Cotton as a sustainable mainstream commodity. Through BCI and its partners, farmers receive training on how to use water efficiently, care for the health of the soil and natural habitats, reduce use of the most harmful chemicals and apply decent work principles. BCI farmers implementing this system are licensed to sell Better Cotton.
By the end of 2018, 90% of the cotton used in our wax jackets will come from BCI sources.
We use leather and wool in some of our garments and footwear. When using these products, it is of paramount importance to us that animals are always treated with care and respect. We set out the below standards in animal welfare that our suppliers must adhere to:
• We do not use shearing from farms that practice mulesing.
• Sheep and lamb wool must be sourced from producers with good animal husbandry.
• We do not use angora, down, real fur, shell or horn in any of our products.
Barbour supports the principles of the Leather Working Group which promotes sustainable and appropriate environmental business practices within the leather industry and promotes leather and skins sourced from carefully selected tanneries which have been awarded with Gold, Silver or Bronze certification.
